Sorting Out Your Garage

An uncluttered house is less stressful than one that is cluttered. This also means the garage and/or shed, which are often the areas that get neglected. It is so easy to throw items into the garage without putting them in place, until you get to the stage where you can’t find what you are looking for. So, the sooner you tidy up your garage or shed the sooner you can make better use of the area.

It is so tempting to put off the task of sorting your garage as it can be a boring job. When you think about tidying your garage you should keep in mind that the purpose of this activity is to find a designated place for everything whilst keeping your things easily accessible for everyday use. Follow these four steps for a logical approach to re-organizing your garage or shed.

Arrange Your Garage Contents

First of all sort and categorize all the items in your garage. To do this you should clean out your garage and start organizing everything into categories. Separate the tools from sporting equipment, electric tools, etc. You will be able to evaluate what you have got and only then will you be able to determine the best way to sort and store everything. Also, you should work out the things that need to be in the garage from the items that should actually be in the basement, attic or better, sold at a garage sale. Remember to recycle everything that you decide to throw away.

Sort Out Seasonal Items and Equipment

A rack like a Broom and Mop Holder should be installedput in to hang garden maintenance tools and to keep them easily accessible yet out of the way. For winter, put snow related equipment like snow blowers, ice scrapers, snow shovels and also skis, snowboards and sleds together. Keep the seasonal equipment together and keep sporting equipment all together as well.

Additional Shelving and Racks

Whilst tidying up you should think about adding more garage storage space to help you keep the organization. There are racks, shelves, hooks and drawers available that will make storing all your gear easier and neater. Shelves, racks and cabinets can be mounted on the walls. The basic principle is to store the items that you use on a regular basis in a way that makes them easily accessible whenever you require them.

Make an Efficient Working Area

Putting in a bench or a table would be a good choice if you use your garage as a workshop. A sturdy tool chest and a pegboard are great in storing your tools and storing them so that they are accessible.

This would be a good time to use a handyman to have cabinets, closets and shelves installed in your garage or shed. Purchase some excellent storage products as described before and begin organizing, sorting and storing.
